The history of Circassia goes back to more than six thousand years. The Circassian civilization arose in the northwest Caucasus, lasted for a long time and contributed positively and continuously to the development of the human race. Circassia is located within the Caucasus plateau, which is considered a natural barrier that includes Mount Elbrus, the highest mountain peak in Europe, which is 18,510 feet above sea level.

Before 1864, the coast of historical Circassia on the Black Sea stretched from Anapa in the north to Adler – near the border of Abkhazia – in the south, and included cities such as: Tuaps and Sochi.

The area of Circassia in the mid-eighteenth century -that is before the Tsarist Russian invasion- reached (55,663) square kilometers, which is greater than the area of Denmark, and the number of the original population was more than two million people. During a long period of their history, the Circassians lived independently.

After centuries of military alliance, Russia broke the agreement and attacked Circassia, and the Circassians fought against the Russian invasion for more than a century (1763 to 1864), which is longer than any other people in the Caucasus. Their final defeat in the 1860s led to a massacre and forcible deportation across the Black Sea to Turkey.
